St Mary's churches walk/talks
St Mary’s Old Church is the last remaining Elizabethan church in London, and unusually (and lucky for us) survived being replaced by the imposing mid-19th century St Mary’s Church now facing it across the road. If you ever wanted to know how the old church survived – my walk on the history of both churches is for you!

St Mary’s Churches
The tour explores key moments in the history of both churches, from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to the reign of Queen Mary, from the English Civil War to the Second World War. We will study the layout, key features and curious stories related to the old church, then cross the road and repeat the exercise at the new church. The tour will also describe the old church crypt and the burial ground (which we will walk around depending on weather and access). It takes in both the exteriors and interiors of both churches with plenty of opportunity to sit down at the pews! There is one road to cross and the walk around the burial ground (when this is possible) does include some narrow and uneven paths.
Meet me at the entrance of the St Mary’s Old Church on Stoke Newington Church Street, which sits between Clissold Park and Stoke Newington Town Hall. For more information on my walks, talks and zines, to join my mailing list or to send me a message, please go to the Contact page.
I look forward to walking with you! Dr Caron Lipman
