Stokey House history Talks and walks
Coming soon! Are you fascinated to discover more about the history of your street? Who lived in the houses before you and your neighbours? What they did, what happened to them? Join me for this unique giant jigsaw puzzle collection of deep-dive social history walks and talks exploring the stories of our Stokey streets – a few roads at a time!
Focusing on the earlier Victorian and Edwardian histories (with brief excursions into earlier and later times), the walks aim to match the story of the physical development of these streets with stories of a few of the hundreds of souls who have lived in them – some for many years, others fleetingly as they passed from one place to another. Mining newspaper records, court cases, academic research, and insights from local historians of the past, the walks aim to highlight both those who have made their mark and those who have been forgotten, offering imaginative access to everyday life in the streets, and to the wider concerns, issues, and beliefs which inform them.
Each walk will take 1 hr 45 mins – 2hrs, and I aim to end at a place of refreshment where neighbours can meet each other, swap stories and share local knowledge. Walking in a roughly clockwise direction starting in the roads south of Church Street, I will offer 2 walks most months; each walk will be numbered and details posted below.
